Associate Professor Brian McPherson Receives $1.3 million USDOE CarbonSAFE Grant Award

The US Department of Energy has announced that EGI and University of Utah USTAR researcher Dr. Brian McPherson has been awarded a $1.3 million U.S. Department of Energy CarbonSAFE award to explore underground CO2 storage. The project “will conduct a high-level sub-basinal evaluation for potential [carbon] storage sites near the PacifiCorp’s Hunter Power Plant.” The effort will also include evaluation of a secondary CO2 source at PacifiCorp’s Huntington Power Plant.

Dr. McPherson also visited KPCW radio in December 2016 to speak with hosts of the program This Green Earth and discuss the possible development of commercial-scale geologic storage sites for carbon capture and sequestration in Utah. Listen to the full interview on This Green Earth at KPCW.org.

Brian McPherson directs the Carbon Science and Engineering Research group at EGI and is Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Utah, endowed by the Utah Science, Technology and Research initiative (USTAR).
