In the past, microfossils have demonstrated their value to Exploration and Production (E&P) as a resource to better understand the distribution of sediments and their source.

We propose to build upon previous work and develop depositional models that relate particular foraminifera assemblages to specific depositional environments. Pollen, spores, algae and dinoflagellate cysts (palynology), and ostracods are particularly useful in paralic and near shore environments, benthic foraminifera provide information on the shelf and deeper waters, and then the pelagic groups – calcareous nannoplankton and planktonic foraminifera are well suited for defining the open-marine water column.

Collectively, these microfossil disciplines provide comprehensive coverage of the depositional environments of primary interest in E&P.
