A combination of academic research and successful exploration on both South American and African sides of the Equatorial Atlantic and along the Coromondal segment of the Eastern Indian margin provide us with growing evidence about numerous key differences between extensional and sheared margins.

Drawing encouragement from recent discoveries at sheared margin segments of the Equatorial Atlantic, we will explore those differences, define the factors which cause them and define their role in order to develop hydrocarbon exploration models for sheared margins. Special attention is given to the deep water portion of sheared margins – the large frontier region, starting to become touched by exploration in 2007-2012.

The strategy is to develop and determine:

  • a new and better appreciation of the factors controlling structural architecture, basin development, and fluid flow in sheared margin settings
  • the factors controlling thermal regimes and temperature peculiarities of sheared margin settings
  • composite models of petroleum systems based on the results of the two previous phase
